VVU-First Ecological Campus in Africa
Valley View University has benefitted from a German Grant totalling 1.3milion Euros through the German Ministry of Education and Research. This was disclosed by the German Ambassador to Ghana, Dr. Marius Haas during an International Conference on sustainable ecological systems, dubbed ECOSY 09, jointly organised by VVU and the Ecological Society of Germany. The Conference was held from July 19 - 24, 2009 under the theme– "Harmonious Ecosystems for a Bright Future: Successful Pathways to Sustainability in Africa" at VVU under the able leadership of Dr. Seth A. Layea, President of VVU and supported by Mr. Gunther Geller, President of the Ecological Society of Germany. The objective of the Conference, among other things, was to bring stakeholders in sustainable management of the ecosystem together to deliberate on ways of ensuring that the ecosystem is managed properly for the benefit of all living organisms.

According to Dr. Marius Haas, the German Government is committed to the management of the ecosystems in Africa, hence the release of the funds. The grant among other things will be used to transform the university into an eco-university. Also, the fund will be used towards the execution of three extension programmes expected to be completed by the end of the year. The programmes comprise the construction of an underground rainwater storage facility, the establishment of a Baobab Centre for Ecological Studies and the protection and cultivation of 10,000 hectares of trees.

The four-day symposium which attracted participants from Africa, Asia, Europe, and China sought to discuss interventions for sustainability and protection of the environment and the ecology from depletion and degradation. At the end of the symposium, recommendations were made for policy formulation to protect the environment and ecosystem.

Indeed the outcome of the symposium will facilitate the holistic development of VVU master plan which is aimed at developing human resource base of approximately 5,000 people on campus.

The Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Hon. Sherry Ayittey, noted that climatic change was an overarching theme on the global agenda, since it had long-term consequences on human life and the environment.

Dr. Seth A. Laryea, President of VVU, indicted that the university was undertaking various research and development programmes in Ecological Engineering, adding that it was partnering with some German Educational Institutions to facilitate its implementation.

Also in attendance were, the Minister of Women & Children Affairs, Hon. Akua Sena Dansua, MP for Kpone Katamanso Area, Hon. Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, and the media. The opening ceremony of the four-day symposium was chaired by the Deputy Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. J. Annang.
