PROFILE OF WILLIAM KOFI KOOMSON, PHD

William Kofi Koomson, a Ghanaian by birth, lived and worked in the Americas, including Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, and the United States of America for the past 30 years, after acquiring his initial secondary education in Ghana. He is married with four adult children.

He has worked for the Seventh-day Adventist Church for the past 35 years as an Administrator and Departmental Director at the local Conference, Union and General Conference (Review and Herald Publishing Association) levels, Vice Principal for the Literature Ministry Seminary, University Professor, College Principal/Rector and Pastor. As part of his evangelistic outreach, he spearheaded a Community Sharing Ministry program in the USA, Canada and Europe to distribute within seven years over 250,000 copies of the book, Steps to Christ. He led in establishing two Churches in North America and through his evangelistic efforts, more than 1510 souls have been baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

SCHOLARSHIP

Professor Koomson is a Puksar/Holmes scholar in education with double PhD degrees from the Pennsylvania State University in Comparative and International Education with emphasis in Educational Administration and Adult Education with emphasis in Post- Secondary Education; double Masters degrees from Cleveland State University in Business Administration and Education (Adult Learning and Development, Human Resource Development emphasis). He has a post-graduate certificate in Program Planning for Higher Education and Corporate Institutions. He acquired a bachelor’s degree in Management and Labor Relations. In addition to academic qualifications, he has a competitive portfolio of professional certifications in accounting, finance, and management accounting (cost accounting).

ACADEMIC CAREER

As Principal/Rector of the Seventh-day Adventist College of Education from 2018 to 2022, he advanced the College’s commitment to teacher education in teaching, research and community service. His tenure at the College saw successful rebranding efforts, in terms of; faculty development, academic excellence in teaching and learning,

commitment to enhancement of students’ academic, social, spiritual and civic experiences. Under his leadership, the College embarked on massive infrastructural development and campus beautification programs to facelift and rebrand the College.

His stewardship as the Director for the Centre for Adult and Distance Education and Acting Pro Vice Chancellor at Valley View University, from August 2016 to November 2018, saw the establishment of VVU’s online learning program through the use of mobile devices. He led in the establishment of the Centre for Academic Research and Engaged Scholarship (CARES), the Writing Centre and Career Services Centre at the university.

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS

Professor Koomson’s strong research background includes several publications in academic journals, authored books and book reviews, chair of academic conferences and presentations at international academic conferences. His understanding of global trends in higher education is substantiated by his various published academic papers and writings, the most recent of which being his papers on eLearning and the application of ubiquitous mobile devices in teaching and learning that were published in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic by the eLearning Industry, a global education consortium. In 2020 and 2021, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC, through T-TEL) featured his work on distance learning using ubiquitous and mobile devices.

CORPORATE EXPERIENCE AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

In addition to working for the Seventh-day Adventist Church organizations, he has accumulated years of corporate work experiences at the mid-and-top career levels in Ghana, Europe, the Caribbean and in North America. His experiences as educator with value-added global perspectives, and as one who has travelled, studied and worked abroad for the past 30 years allow him to bring evidence-based practices to how he leads, teaches and relates to all stakeholders.

His work at the Seventh-day Adventist College of Education attracted admiration and respect from many, including the Omanhene, Chiefs and Elders of Asokoreman-Benkum Division, of New Juaben Traditional Area. He was honored for his dedicated work, insightful leadership and revitalization of the College Community and the entire New Juaben Traditional Area. In August 2021, he was awarded by the Omanhene with a new title as: Oseadeyo Professor William Kofi Koomson (“Oseadeyo” – meaning, he that promises and fulfils it).
