Career and Capacity Development Summit

Valley View University, through its Directorate of Career Services, in collaboration with the National Academy of Students’ Achievement Awards Ghana (NASAAG) organised a Career and Capacity Development Summit at the Seth Laryea Multipurpose Centre at Valley View University on Friday, March 10, 2023.

The summit was graced by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. William Kofi Koomson, who warmly welcomed the guests to the University; but also vehemently expressed his dissatisfaction at the late commencement of the summit due to the lateness of the student body. Prof. Koomson ceased the opportunity to enlighten the students on the relevance of being on time for appointments. He emphasized that time consciousness should be a character to cherish now and later upon completion of school.

The Director of University Career Services, Ms. Ama Oforiwaa Nkrumah, noted that the purpose of gathering for the Career and Capacity Development Summit was to empower students with the skills and values that would assist them in their search for jobs in the labour market and also to equip them with the requisite tools and mindset to stand as successful entrepreneurs.

The event, despite its late commencement, was massively attended by students of the University. The programme, which was to kickstart at 9 o’clock in the morning actually commenced one and half hours later. The memorable summit was facilitated by:

1.       1. Mr. Riffath Yakub Abubakar – NASAAG President. Honourable Riffath shared the aim of NASAAG with the congregation. That NASAAG stands to bridge the gap between academia and the industry by bringing together students and experts in the corporate to interact. NASAAG seeks to empower, support and align students to their respective professions for greater heights in their community.

2.       Ms. Judith Aikins – Manager, Export Trade Ghana, Exim Bank. Ms. Aikins was so touchy on her interview tips and drafting of CVS/Resume. That CV tells a job candidate’s story. It should be unique for different vacancies sought for. It should detail energizing words like creative-mindedness, team player, problem-solver and other appealing words exhibiting a person’s make-up. At interview hour, candidates should keep a level eye, attentive to questions posed and respond accordingly.

3.       Ms. Emmaline Datey – CEO, ICS Africa, HR Strategist, SME Consultant, Personal Development Coach, Member of Board of Trustees of NASAAG. She prompted students that the government cannot hire or create jobs for every graduate in Ghana. Ms. Datey urged prospective graduates to search for voluntary tasks during vacations to equip them with requisite work experiences to fast-track future employment. Being resourceful is key for success and that “if one rebels all the time, s/he cannot be creative.” She called on students to be diligent in execution of assignments given; no giving of excuses.

4.       Mr. Gord-Afful – Lecturer at KNUST, Coach, Memory Trainer, CEO of Eduwaynes Project Management Consult, Member, Board of Trustees of NASAAG. He made participants embraced the significance of training their minds for active study. Participants attention were drawn to interesting acronyms like Goal, Personal Development and Action (GPA) and Motivation, Attention and Methods (MAM). Those were exciting and educative to get students to re-think their way of studying effectively for the future.
