"Politics Meets Christianity at Service" - Hon Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije

As part of the University's Chapel Service Series,  Valley View University has hosted the Honourable Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South as the guest speaker.

The event was held at the Seth Laryea Multi-purpose Centre and was attended by members of the University community.

Addressing the audience on the topic 'the Christian and Politics', Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije stressed on the fact that Christianity and politics should be complementary rather than being perceived as mutually exclusive as often is the case.

Drawing form experiences during his days as a young person in the Seventh-day Adventist Church at Hansen road, Dr Vanderpuije recounted the personal evangelistic activities he undertook together with other members of the Church at the time in opening up several brunches of the church in Accra.

Dr Vanderpuije attributed his success in politics today to what he described as the "the life of service I rendered to God and humankind". Thus to him, Christianity and politics converge at service.

Dr Vanderpuije encouraged students and staff who are interested in politics not to shy away from it; provided it is motivated by the desire to serve others and glorify God and not for self-aggrandizement.

Dr Vanderpuije until his election for a second term as the Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma South Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, had served as the Mayor of Accra for two terms and had severed in several capacities under Ex-Presidents: HE Flt Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, HE John Evans Atta Mills and HE John Dramani Mahama.

Dr Vanderpuije had also had a successful career as an educationist in the United States of America as principal of schools.

Dr Vanderpuije is a member of the  Seventh-day Adventist Church and has served the church both in Ghana and in the United States in several capacities.

The service was graced by two of  Dr Oko Vanderpuije's childhood friends: Pastor Isaac Nii Dowuona, the Immediate past Chaplain of the University and Prof William Oblitey the Director of Graduate Programs, Faculty of Science.
