The mandate of the Department of Arts and Social Science Education is to prepare musicians and music teachers to excel in the music industry. Contemporary trends and demands in music careers have dictated the pace for expansion in the knowledge base of the music curriculum. In the light of this, the department seeks to train and equip students of Bachelor of Arts in Music Education with the appropriate skills to pursue careers in the music industry as choral directors, church organists, composers, music technicians, studio managers, music broadcasters and theatre directors.
 
Philosophy
The underlying and guiding philosophy of this programme is to promote scholarship, as well as the search for, and apply musical knowledge through education. It is primarily informed by the theoretical understanding and knowledge generation in Music. It aims to make professional musicians out of candidates, enabling them to take on leadership roles in church and the music industry. The department is committed to pursuing this philosophy through the provision of a world-class programme in music aimed at training highly skilled and globally-employable musicians and music educators capable of practicing music.

Valley View University believes that there are many Ghanaian musicians, be it instrumentalist or vocalists, out there who have the ability to perform music but lack formal training.  It is for this reason that the Arts and Social Science Education Department has designed this programme to help such people acquire formal training in music. Our cutting edge courses are designed to help develop the skills and talents of students, whilst preparing to become professional music teachers and professional musicians. It will admit Senior Secondary School leavers, SSSCE/WASSCE, ‘A’ level, ‘O’ level and Matured students into the Bachelor of Music Education programme.

Programme Objectives
At the end of the programme, students will be able to:
  1. acquire the requisite skills and competencies for the teaching of music, dance, and drama at the pre-tertiary levels.
  2. promote cultural and music activities in schools and communities.
  3. develop and maintain interest in indigenous music in themselves and others.
  4. take up leadership roles in organizations that deal with music.
  5. take up various careers in the music profession outside the classroom.

Students’ admission, progression, and graduation
Clearly state the policies on minimum qualifications for admission into the programme, retention, and graduation.

Applicants for the Bachelor of Education in Music Education are expected to have met the following prerequisites:

(a)  4-Year B. Ed. Music Education

 i) Direct candidates

Candidates must have passed in three core and three elective subjects. A pass in Music will be an advantage.

 ii) Mature Candidates

Mature applicants must be at least 25 years old, and show proof of age with a birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth which is at least 25 years old at the time of application; will be required to take an entrance examination and attend an interview to determine their eligibility for the programme.

(iii) Admission to the Bachelor of Music Education programme
Students in the Diploma in Music programme may be admitted to the Bachelor of Music Education programme at the beginning of the third year if they obtain a GPA of 2.5 or better at the end of their second year in the Diploma in Music programme. However, such students will not be awarded the Diploma in Music Certificate.

(b) 2-Year Diploma in music

Mature applicants must be at least 25 years old, and show proof of age with a birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth which is at least 25 years old at the time of application; will be required to take an entrance examination and attend an interview to determine their eligibility for the programme.
