Valley View University Hosts Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia paid a courtesy call on faculty, staff and students of Valley View University at Oyibi on Thursday, October 1, 2020.

The visit was part of his Greater Accra Regional Tour to the Kpone Katamanso Constituency.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of Valley View University, Professor Daniel Kwame Bediako congratulated the government for the major strides made in the area of education in the country. He, however, appealed to the government through Dr. Bawumia to re-open tertiary institutions for them to teach through the online mode. According to the Vice Chancellor, most private universities are struggling to survive due to the closure of the universities. He indicated that the continuous closure of the universities will lead to the total collapse of most private universities since their main source of income is from the collection of school fees. Prof. Bediako disclosed that he as the Vice Chair of private universities in Ghana is aware that most private universities are at the verge of collapsing if universities in the country are not re-opened as a matter of urgency.

The NPP Parliamentary candidate of the Kpone Katamanso Constituency, Mr. Hopeson Adorye, who was introduced at the meeting, gave a brief statement and solicited for the support of the electorates.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice President took the opportunity to outline some of the major projects of the NPP government. Notable among them were the following: the type of Ghana the NPP government, under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is building, strides that have been made in the educational sector, such as increasing access to education  which, according to him, will accelerate the developmental agenda of the country like South Korea, where there is a higher access of 94% to tertiary education as compared to 17% of Ghana, plans to arrange SSNIT loan scheme for students of both the government and private universities when NPP becomes successful in the impending elections. This strategy according to the Vice President, will build an educated economy whereby students who gain access to tertiary education and cannot afford the fees will be supported financially. Other things that the government is doing in the area of agriculture and industrialization were also mentioned.

As part of the programme, Valley View University chapter of TESCON made a presentation of a citation to the Vice President to acknowledge his government’s enormous support to the youth of the country in the area of education.

Both Management and the entire community were grateful for the Vice President’s choice of Valley View University as part his tour of Greater Accra Region.
